SOCSO | SubramaniamSEGAMAT: Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri S.Subramaniam said the Government was serious about plans for workers in the private sector to receive pension after they retire.

He said funds from the Employees Provision Fund (EPF), especially from the low wage category, was often used up within three years which resulted in many falling into the hard-core poor category.

“After seeing the model used in various developed countries and discussion with trade agencies here, the Government had taken the first step by requesting a think tank to conduct a comprehensive study on the matter last year.

“They recently revealed the findings of their studies and recommended several methods of implementing the model, but acknowledged there was numerous complications and challenges before a suitable draft could be ready,” he said.

He added that no time frame had been set for implementation, as it needed fine-tuning so it would not burden employers and adversely affect the economy.

Subramaniam said this after launching the Segamat-level labour day celebrations at the Batu Anam municipal council field on Wednesday morning.

The theme for this year’s labour day celebrations is “pekerja pemangkin transformasi negara” (workers the catalyst for national transformation).

Among the 1,500 people who attended the event were 700 people who worked in 61 estates in the nearby area, factory workers, civil servants, representatives from Ceupacs, Malaysian Trade Union Congress (MTUC) and various agencies under the Human Resources Ministry.

Also in attendance were Human Resources Ministry chief secretaryDatuk Seri Zainal Rahim Seman and Segamat district officer Abdul Rahim Nin.
