Abdul Aziz Mohd YusoffPUTRAJAYA: The Election Commission (EC) has urged political parties and the public to stop spreading unofficial results, saying it could cause confusion.

This followed Opposition Leader Anwar Ibrahim’s declaration of victory for Pakatan Rakyat on his Twitter account at 7pm, just two hours after counting started at tallying centres nationwide.

“SPR has received reports of irresponsible political parties spreading inaccurate information declaring that they have won the election,” EC chairman Abdul Aziz Yusof told a press conference here.

“To those parties, the EC advises them not to spread unofficial results through SMSes and social media networks before our official announcement,” he added.

“This is to avoid confusion among the public.”

Both Barisan Nasional and Pakatan are confident of capturing Putrajaya and both have been leaking unofficial figures. BN says it can win 145 federal seats, with at least 118 in the white list. Pakatan has said it can win at least 117 federal seats.
