MELAKA, May 7 – Sungai Udang Assemblyman Datuk Ir Idris Haron has been appointed the 10th Chief Minister of Melaka, replacing Datuk Seri Mohd Ali Rustam who held the post for 13 years since December 1999.
Idris, 47, took the oath of office before the Melaka Yang Dipertua Negeri Tun Mohd Khalil Yaakob at the Yang Dipertua Negeri’s Office in Ayer Keroh here today.
Also present at the function were Idris’ wife, Datin Fadilah Abdullah, and Mohd Ali. Idris, a graduate of University of Texas in the United States of America, was formerly Deputy Higher Education Minister.
He is also chairman of Syarikat Perumahan Negara Berhad (SPNB).
In the 13th general election last Sunday, Idris won the Sungai Udang state seat, securing 12,145 votes, against Parti Keadilan Rakyat’s Asri Buang with a 9,136-votes majority.
Barisan Nasional (BN) retained power in Melaka with a two-thirds majority after winning 21 of the 28 state seats.
