PETALING JAYA, May 15- Pakatan Rakyat has accepted Umno’s challenge to meet the Election Commission (EC) to explain their dissatisfaction over the 13th general election results.
The opposition coalition was responding to Umno information chief Ahmad Maslan’s challenge yesterday to invite EC chief Abdul Aziz Mohd Yusof to explain their “baseless accusations” such as “phantom voters, blackout and hiring foreigners to vote in the GE13″.
PKR secretary-general Saifuddin Nasution Ismail (photo) today announced that Pakatan has agreed to invite Abdul Aziz to an open dialogue to address their concerns.
“I hope that after what Ahmad Maslan has said, Abdul Aziz would not reject our invitation (to an open dialogue),” Saifuddin told a press conference here.
“If he (Abdul Aziz) refuses, then I believe Ahmad Maslan will assist us in getting him (Abdul Aziz) to participate,” he added.
Saifuddin said Pakatan was “ever ready” to face the EC chairman.
“We have been gathering evidence. We are ever ready. If he (Abdul Aziz) can find time to attend Umno’s dialogue yesterday, then he can find time to attend ours,” he added.
National Unity Convention
Saifuddin also announced Pakatan’s plan to organise a National Unity Convention in light of the racial polarisation that was distinctly noticeable following the recent polls.
“We feel there is a need for a convention on national unity and Pakatan has taken the initiative to discuss and come up with viable and genuine formulas to unite the people,” he said.
However, he did not announce the date and venue of the convention and said it was still in early planning.
“Following the results of GE13, it is clear that the people are fed up with Umno-BN playing the race card,” he said.
“It is time for the people to unite regardless of race,” he added.
