KUALA LUMPUR, June 6- The Regent of Perak, Raja Dr Nazrin Shah yesterday described the institution of monarchy as a vibrant symbol of unity and togetherness in building unity in diversity in Malaysia’s multiracial society.
He said this institution since a long time ago had unopenly played the role of social bonding that successfully managed to unite the people.
“The monarchical rule since in its original and early state, mirrors harmonious practices – rejecting extremism. It has been core to the process of building and developing a nation-state.
“The rulers have been the symbol of the land inherited by the Malays and played the role of bastion and protector of Islam and Malay culture.
“The rulers also play the role of patrons to all citizens from all ethnic groups who practise different religions. Fair patronage of the rulers is extended to all citizens who have accepted the Constitution and have been living comfortably in this land.”
Raja Nazrin said this in his keynote address titled, “The Constitution and Islam: Role of the Monarchy Institution” at a seminar themed ‘Making Monarchical Rule Sustainable’, here, today.
The seminar was opened by the Raja of Perlis, Tuanku Syed Sirajuddin Syed Putra Jamalullail.
Raja Nazrin said the wave of disunity that hit the people in this country since the 12th general election was worrying if it happened in the name of religion or race.
“In such a scenario, the supremacy of the institution of monarchy needs to be protected from any form of defilement so that the citizens continue to show loyalty.”
Raja Nazrin said the people needed to be reminded of the country’s old history, that conflicts could erupt due to malicious lies and jealousy, and rulers being influenced by the wrong side.
He noted that the role and responsibilities of the Yang di-Pertuan Agong as stipulatd in the Federal Constitution proved that the post of head of state was not created solely to carry out ceremonial obligations.
Raja Nazrin said it was very important for a ruler to be neutral and to be above all political polemics so that the monarchy institution would continue to function as a just arbitrator in resolving any dispute.
“This task is not easy as it requires expertise, wisdom, experience and maturity. “The task is even more challenging in a multiracial and multireligious society, coupled with an increasing number of young people with various idealism and exposed to the influences of globalisation, in this racial composition.”
Raja Nazrin said the monarchy institution was now going through an evolution so that its role would be more relevant, remain dynamic and able to deal with the current demands and needs, especially as an instrument of unity in diversity.
