KUALA LUMPUR, June 19- The Federal Territory Ministry will review the status of hawker licences owned by foreigners in the federal capital which were believed to have been obtained from local hawkers.
Its minister, Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor (photo) said that lately more and more foreigners trading in the federal capital had admitted that they obtained their hawker’s licence from the local traders.
“Actually, we don’t give out the licence to them (foreigners) to trade in the federal capital, but look at Petaling Street and Chow Kit now, most of the traders are not locals,” he told reporters after handing out contributions to 10 victims of the fire at Kampung Baru and Pasar Raja Bot, here today.
He described the sale of the licence by the local hawkers to the foreigners as an unresponsible act because the licences were issued by the government to ease the burden of the poor city dwellers.
“What is more regrettable is that a few hawkers’ association in the federal capital had exploited the situation to make extra profit, thus they should never sell their licences to foreigners,” he said.
