PETALING JAYA, JUNE 19- Home Minister Ahmad Zahid Hamidi today dismissed calls for his resignation pending the outcome of a civil suit filed against him. He said only the prime minister can make that decision.
“The prime minister is the one who appoints and dismisses a minister, that is his prerogative,” he said when responding to Puchong MP Gobind Singh who made the call earlier this month.
Gobind reportedly said it was improper for Ahmad Zahid to be a minister because he has been recently ordered to answer a civil suit for allegedly assaulting businessman Amir Abdullah Bazli in 2006.
It is alleged that Ahmad Zahid had done so because Amir was having an intimate relationship with his married daughter.
Meanwhile on a separate issue, Ahmad Zahid said he has received election petitions filed against him for alleged electoral misconducts and has instructed Umno lawyers to study the case.
He said he would not respond to PKR strategic director Rafizi Ramli who last week accused him of allegedly spending more than the maximum RM200,000 amount allowed under the Election Offences Act 1954.
“I will see them in court. Moreover it wasn’t he who filed the election petitions, it was my opponent (in Bagan Datuk constituency),” he said.
