KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 – Former Indian Progressive Front (IPF) deputy president R.Ravi Shanker today urged former president, M. Sambanthan (photo), to join in the negotiation to resolve internal problems in the party to avoid the Registar of Societies (ROS) from revoking the party registration.
He said the party had been given until June 30 to resolve its problems, including on the president’s post. “Today is the fourth time and Sambanthan still failed to attend the meeting,” he added.
The controversy in IPF started since 2008 following the death of its founder, Tan Sri M.G Pandithan, which led to the party to be divided into two factions, one supporting Pandithan’s widow, Jayshree MG Pandithan, and the other, former president M.V Mathiyalagan.
The problem worsened when Jayshree, who was acting president in 2010, recognised Sambanthan as president, although Mathiyalagan was elected to the post at the party’s general assembly.
“This problem has to be resolved fast and Sambanthan should abide by the wish of party members who want the problem to be resolved at the negotiation table,” said Ravi.
Ravi said he would send a letter to the ROS to be given more time to resolve the problem. He said the ROS had sent two notices, dated June 1 and June 15, about party matters, including on the two names named as party president.
IPF, formed in 1990, has more than one million members nationwide.
