PUTRAJAYA, June 26 – The Election Commission (EC) will hold a special meeting to set the by-election date for the Kuala Besut state seat after receiving an official acknowledgement on its vacancy.

wan-ahmadEC Deputy Chairman Wan Ahmad Wan Omar said at the moment EC had not received any official letter from the State Assembly Speaker and was expecting to receive it shortly.

“After that, the EC will issue an official statement when the special meeting will be held. According to the State and Federal Constitutions, the by-election should be held within 60 days from the date of vacancy,” he said when contacted by Bernama here today. The seat fell vacant following the death of incumbent Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar, 55, who passed away at the Sultanah Nur Zahirah Hospital (HSNZ) Terengganu today from lung cancer.
