MELAKA, July 1 – Datuk Othman Muhamad was today re-elected as the Speaker of the Melaka State Legislative Assembly for a second term.
Othman who was appointed to the post on April 21, 2008, even received one vote from Bukit Baru state assemblyman Dr Khalid Kassim from PAS while another 21 Barisan Nasional state assemblymen voted in favour of him but six DAP state assemblymen, abstained from voting.
Earlier, Melaka Chief Minister Datuk Idris Haron who is also Sungai Udang state assemblyman had proposed that Othman be re-appointed as Speaker and seconded by Gadek assemblyman Datuk M.S Mahadevan.
Idris said Othman had carried out his duties well and with his experience and knowledge, was capable of conducting the assembly efficiently.
Meanwhile, Durian Tunggal state assemblyman, Datuk Ab Wahab Ab Latip was appointed Deputy Speaker.
Speaking at the swearing-in ceremony, Othman urged every member of the assembly to ensure it was a place to resolve people’s problems and not a battle ground for political parties.
“Bring forth the people’s problems to the assembly wisely, as cultured Malaysians,” he said.
Meanwhile, 28 members of the assembly, including seven from the opposition, led by Idris took their oath before Othman, today.
In the 13th general election, BN captured 21 of the 28 state assembly seats to retain power.
