MELAKA, July 2 – The MIC chairman and deputy posts should be uncontested at the September party elections to ensure stability for the sake of the Indian community, Melaka MIC Liaison chairman Datuk M.S Mahadevan said  today.

subra-and-palani“The MIC Chairman (Datuk Seri G. Palanivel) and deputy (Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam) should be given more time to implement their plans for the development of the Indian community,” he told Bernama here.

Palanivel and Dr Subramaniam were both elected on December 6 2010.

Commenting as to whether not contesting the positions would have implications on MIC’s democratic system, Mahadevan said the immediate priority was to unite party members first.

“This is not about democracy but about strengthening the party. We are just concerned that a contest at this stage would jeopardise party unity,” he said.

On a separate development he informed that Melaka MIC would form an additional 30 branches to be led by youths.

“We have 140 branches now with memberships ranging between 60 and 200 each. This is our way of attracting more young people into the party,” he said.
