BESUT, July 11- The Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for Kuala Besut state by-election has pledged to improve the livelihood of fishermen in Kuala Besut.
Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abd Rahman, 37, said as he was raised in the vicinity of a fishing village, it had been his ardent hope to assist poor fishermen someday while he was pursuing his studies at Universiti Sains Malaysia.
“I am surrounded a fishing community since childhood, I was saddened to see their hardship.
“As I came among fishermen, if I am given the opportunity to serve as assemblyman, I will do my best to help them to improve their livelihood.
“I pledge to continue the good work of previous elected representatives in championing fishermen,” he told Bernama after visiting the Kuala Besut incumbent assemblyman Dr A Rahman Mokhtar’s grave here today.
Tengku Zaihan said he was glad that he was involved in the implementation of a project to deepen Sungai Kuala Besut estuary to facilitate fishing boats going out to sea and land their catch at the fish landing complex as an engineer with the Drainage and Irrigation Department.
“Now God has opened up the opportunity for me under the tutelage of the BN to vie for the Kuala Besut state seat to serve the people,” he said.
Tengku Zaihan felt that fishermen ought to have better fishing gears and fish landing complex while facilities for tourism in Kuala Besut needed to be upgraded.
Earlier, he presented aid totalling RM426,200 under Dana Bakti Remaja to 2,132 Kuala Besut youths at the Seri Seratus Community Hall here. Each youth received RM200.
