KUALA BESUT, July 16 – PAS lauds any development projects and poverty eradication programmes planned by the federal or state government for the people in Kuala Besut.

Besut PAS chief Wan Azhar Wan Ahmad (photo) said the party did not oppose any forms of development, especially when it was free and aimed to provide comfort to the poor and the underprivileged.

He said PAS just didn’t want Umno and Barisan Nasional (BN) to turn the Kuala Besut state by-election, scheduled for July 24, into another platform to make promises of development just for the sake of wooing the voters.

Recently, Deputy Prime Minister Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin launched an affordable housing project for the low-income, poor and underprivileged people in Kampung Lay Out Tok Saboh.

Muhyiddin was also reported as saying that the implementation of the project was in line with the BN’s policy at both the federal and the state levels, as well as Islamic teachings, to tackle housing issues and provide the Muslims with a better living condition.

The Kuala Besut by-election will see a straight fight between BN candidate Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abd Rahman, 37, and PAS candidate Endot alias Azlan Yusoh, 48.

The by-election has been necessitated by the death of assemblyman Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar of the BN of lung cancer on June 26. He won the seat with a 2,434 majority by beating Napisah Ismail of PAS in the general election on May 5.

Kuala Besut has 17,683 voters.

On the report that PAS had barred Endot from making any spontaneous statements to the media, Wan Azhar said the party had decided that any statements could only be made at their daily press conference.

“The candidate will attend the press conference occasionally because he has a very tight schedule,” he said.
