KUALA BESUT, July 16 – Two former Kuala Besut assemblymen are helping Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate Tengku Zaihan Che Ku Abd Rahman garner the support of voters in the state seat by-election campaign.

The two, Datuk Wan Zakaria Abdul Rahman and Abdullah Che Muda, are committed to ensuring that BN retain the Kuala Besut seat in the by-election this July 24. The by-election is being held following the death of the incumbent assemblyman Dr A. Rahman Mokhtar on June 26 from lung cancer.

“Abdullah and I have our own strategies to win the hearts of the voters and our helping Tengku Zaihan is also in keeping with the Ramadan spirit. However, we cannot divulge our strategies,” said Wan Zakaria, here.

He said he could share his own experience in facing the Kuala Besut by-election in 1979 with Tengku Zaihan although the political scenario and campaign had changed much now with the use of the new media.

As the area’s assemblyman from 1979 to 1999, Wan Zakaria said he was well-versed with the voters and knew of a more effective way to win their support.

He said the campaign strategies used by BN would determine the decision of the voters in choosing their elected representative.

The Kuala Besut by-election in 1979 was also held during the month of Ramadan which saw Wan Zakaria, who represented BN, defeating PAS candidate Husin Jusoh with a 797-vote majority.

Wan Zakaria said the BN candidate this time was the best choice due to his personality, career background and his contributions to the residents of Kuala Besut, besides being a local-born.

In the upcoming by-election, Tengku Zaihan will face businessman Endut@Azlan Yusof from PAS.
