PUTRAJAYA, July 22 – Senior lawyer Datuk Seri Muhammad Shafee Abdullah (photo) has been appointed prosecutor by the Attorney-General to lead the prosecution in its appeal against Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim’s acquittal for sodomy.Muhammad Shafee informed a three-member Court of Appeal panel on Monday, that he was appointed to appear as prosecutor in the appeal, by way of a “fiat” under Section 376 (3) of the Criminal Procedure Code (CPC).
After the proceeding ended, he told the media that his letter of appointment was signed by the Attorney-General on July 2, this year and he received the letter, nine days later.
The appeal was scheduled for hearing today and tomorrow but the Court of Appeal panel chaired by Justice Datuk Ramly Ali postponed the appeal and fixed Aug 1 for case management to fix a hearing date after lawyer Ram Karpal Singh informed the court that lead counsel Karpal Singh was hospitalised.
“We will inform (the prosecution and defence) of the new hearing date by way of a letter,” said Ramly who presided on the panel with justices Datuk Tengku Maimun Tuan Mat and Datuk Mohd Zawawi Salleh.
