KUALA LUMPUR, July 30- There had been no report of foreign students spreading Syiah teachings at higher learning institutions in the country, said Deputy Education Minister P.Kamalanathan.
He said the Education Ministry was cooperating with the Malaysia Islamic Development Department (JAKIM) in looking out for Syiah teachings being spread at these learning institutions.
“Members of the public with knowledge of such acvivities going on at any of the learning institutions are urged to report and provide details,” he said when winding up the debate on the royal address in the Dewan Negara Monday.
Kamalanathan gave the assurance that the matter would be investigated if a report was received by the ministry. “The problem is no such report has been made,” he added.
As at December 2012, there were 26,239 foreign students studying at 139 higher learning institutions in Malaysia.
Kamalanathan said the ministry had established cooperation with various enforcement agencies to curb negative activities involving foreign students.
On Islamic religious schools, he said there were 198 government-aided religious schools, state schools and public religious schools (sekolah agama rakyat) throughout the country.
He said private religious schools were not under the ministry.
