KUCHING, Aug 6- The Government is confident a new law to replace the Emergency Ordinance (EO) would tackle the crime rate, especially crimes committed by ex-offenders, said Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Nancy Shukry.

SK03_190513_MENTERI BARUShe said the public needed to understand, as the prime minister had stated, that the new law was tough but good for the people as their security was more important.

“Definitely, we are not going back to the EO, but we are coming out with a new preventive law. Right now, we are still sitting down and looking into the appropriate prohibition.

“A lab is going to be established after the Hari Raya celebration, (and it) will be headed by Datuk Seri Idris Jala (Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department), and the rest of the ministers going in there will be me, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi and Senator Datuk Paul Low Seng Kuan (Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department).

“We are coordinating all possibilities in having the first crime prevention act,” Nancy told reporters when met after presenting Hari Raya contributions to 28 children at the Pediatric Ward of the Sarawak General Hospital Monday.

Elaborating, she said the government was aware of some things that became constraints to the police in carrying out their duties, especially involving ex-offenders.

She said to develop the new act, the government was also looking at various laws which countries such as the US and Singapore used, to make a comparison study and look into which one was more appropriate for Malaysia.
