KUALA LUMPUR, Aug 12 – Gerakan today urged the government to form a cross-party committee to bolster the fight against crime in the country.

Secretary-general Datuk Mah Siew Keong said the rising crime rate, especially involving the use of firearms, was of grave concern to the people and a new formula was needed to fight crime.

He said all parties must also work together to urgently tackle this problem.

“The current conundrum necessitates that we are in need of a cross-party committee comprising of all relevant stakeholders to mount a fightback as a united team,” he said in a statement.

Mah suggested that the committee comprise representatives from the federal and state governments, relevant government agencies, non-governmental organisations, professional groups and the police.

He also suggested that the committee be answerable to a parliamentary select committee.

“Consensus, coordination and cooperation from all parties concerned is essential in ensuring that all parties are on the same page and working concertedly to tackle the crime menace,” he said.
