SEPANG, Sept 21 (Bernama) – Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has expressed appreciation for Umno members for supporting him as president and his deputy, Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin as deputy president.
Their return as Umno president and deputy president uncontested allow them to concentrate on efforts to consolidate the party and continue its policies and government administration without being pressured by any quarter.
“This shows the responsible attitude of members who regard the president and deputy president as the party’s pillar of strength,” he told a press conference before leaving for United States to lead the Malaysian delegation to the 68th United Nations General Assembly in New York, here Saturday.
Those present at Kompleks Bunga Raya, KL International Airport (KLIA) include Muhyiddin, Rural and Regional Development Minister Datuk Seri Mohd Shafie Apdal, Wanita Umno chief Datuk Seri Shahrizat Abdul Jalil and Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Dr Rais Yatim.
Najib said although the Umno constitution was amended making the party more open and easier for members to contest for posts, they acted with maturity by regarding the president and deputy president as the party’s source of strength.
They believe that those holding the top two Umno posts should be given full support to keep the party strong.
“I would like to thank Umno members at all levels for their support which ensures that the democratic process runs smoothly and under control.”
He hopes that the contest for the other posts will run smoothly without any untoward incidents.
