SEPT 23- Recent communal clashes in Muzaffarnagar weighing on her mind, UPA chairperson Sonia Gandhi on Sunday accused the Opposition BJP of hatching conspiracies and spreading rumours to create rift in society in its bid to return to power.
She was addressing a Congress rally at Bhilwara in Rajasthan where she laid foundation stones of two projects – Chambal-Bhilwara Drinking Water Scheme and Mainline Electrical Multiple Unit Coach Factory.
“Political parties such as the BJP indulge in spreading rumours, misleading people and criticising the government,” Gandhi said.
Referring to the Congress-led UPA government’s welfare schemes, she asked what stopped the BJP from legislating and initiating such programmes when it was in power. “The BJP cares only for its men and wants only power.”
The Congress is the only party that believed in social and communal harmony and inclusive growth, she said.
Slamming the BJP for trying to block pro-poor welfare schemes such as food security programme and land acquisition, Gandhi said the UPA government went ahead with the related Bills as they would take care of malnutrition and interests of the peasantry.
Emphasising the importance of social and communal harmony in development, she said the Congress believed in the growth of all the sections of the society.
Gandhi was all praise for Rajasthan’s Ashok Gehlot government for being the first in the country to introduce free medicine scheme and medical tests.
