Kuala Lumpur, Nov 8 – A total of 273 motions from 191 Umno divisions have been received to be scrutinised for debate at the party’s general assembly at the Putra World Trade Centre from Dec 2 to 7.

Umno vice-president Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein, who also chairs the committee on the motion for the assembly, said the motions were among 301 received, out of which 28 were accepted without debate by the committee.

He said the motions that would be tabled for debate were divided into several sections, including economy which would be chaired by Datuk Seri Mustapa Mohamed and Datuk Dr Awang Adek Hussin.

The session on education would be chaired by Second Education Minister Datuk Seri Idris Jusoh, while Minister in the Prime Minister’s Department Datuk Seri Jamil Khir Baharom would chair the session on religion, he told a media conference here Thursday.

Hishammuddin said motions on politics topped the list, totalling 72, followed by religion (37), economy (36), education (46), social (12) and others (70).

He said besides the motions on the agenda to empower Bumiputera economy, the results of the 13th general election, particularly on Umno’s performance, was expected to be a hot issue to be debated at the assembly.

Umno won 88 of the 133 seats controlled by Barisan Nasional in the last general election.

Asked whether this year’s assembly would be made a platform by delegates to urge the party to revert to the old system, Hishammuddin said the little weaknesses in the new system, following amendments to the party constitution, should not be an excuse for members to want to return to the old system.
