A pilot project will be launched in the city on Nov 19 before being extended to Kochi and Kozhikode in the next phase.

Gender Park chief executive officer PTM Sunish said the goal is to have a fleet of 300 She Taxis in the coming days.

Considered the first initiative in the country, the programme is also hoped to contribute to the socio-economic development of women.

“This is an eftort to address the ever growing threats on the safety and security of women while at the same time contributing to the socio-economic empowerment of women in the state,” Sunish said.

The taxis’ movement will be monitored by a control room especially set up for this purpose.

“The taxi will have safety features like emergency switches for drivers and passengers and a safety map, GPRS, mobile emergency alerts and so on,” Sunish said.
