New Delhi, Nov 13 – India’s Prime Minister Manmohan Singh on Tuesday conveyed his condolences to Philippines President Benigno Aquino over the catastrophe caused by typhoon Haiyan and offered help in relief and rehabilitation efforts.
“The scale and severity of the death and destruction caused by the typhoon has saddened and shocked us,” Press Trust of India (PTI) quotes Singh in his message to Aquino.
“I write to convey to you the deepest condolences by the people of India. Our thoughts and prayers are with the victims and Filipinos in this extraordinary moment of grief,” he wrote.
Typhoon Haiyan made landfall in the Philippines last Friday and Saturday and caused extensive damage to Tacloban city on Leyte island as it whipped through central Philippines.
The typhoon has claimed at least 10,000 lives and displaced about 660,000 in the Philippines.
Singh said he has full faith in the capacity of the Aquino government to provide immediate relief to the affected communities and help rebuild their lives.
“We stand ready to provide all help to support the relief and rehabilitation efforts of your government,” he said.
