Kuala Lumpur, Nov 26 -Toll cannot be abolished just like that as it could expose the government to a host of legal and financial implications from the resulting breach of contract with highway concessionaires, Works Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof told the Dewan Rakyat here Monday.

He said following the government’s discussions with the companies some of them have reviewed toll rates to ease the people’s burden, including the North-South Highway concessionaire which agreed not to raise the rate for five years.

Fadillah was wrapping up the committee level 2014 Supply Bill debate.

Responding to Khalid Abdul Samad’s (PAS-Shah Alam) allegations of the government looking for excuses to charge toll whereas other countries were not doing so, Fadillah said Malaysia had good federal roads as the alternative.

He also noted that the Finance Ministry had allocated more than RM498 million per annum directly to the Selangor government for road maintenance in the state, when Mohd Azmin Ali (PKR-Gombak) interrupted wanting to know if Selangor received any funding.
