New Delhi, Dec 19 – The Indian government says unemployment rate has increased marginally in the country, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

Minister of State for Labour and Employment Kodikunnil Suresh told the Rajya Sabha (upper house of parliament) on Wednesday surveys conducted during 2009-10 and 2011-12 showed unemployment rate in India increased from 2.0 percent to 2.2 percent in this period.

However, the number of people employed rose from 465.5 million to 474.1 million at that time, the minister said in response to a question.

“Filling up of posts in various government offices, public sector undertakings including railway and other departments is a matter of priority and is being actively pursued,” he said.

“Vacancies are being filled up on an ongoing basis based on requirements of various departments.”

To another question, Kodikunnil said data from state governments reveal at least 500,000 and 400,000 Indians were recruited through employment exchanges in 2010 and 2011 respectively.
