New Delhi, Dec 19 – A number of activists staged a protest outside the U.S Embassy in New Dehli on Wednesday over the alleged ill-treatment of India’s deputy consul general in New York Devyani Khobragade by U.S. authorities, Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.
Protestors from various organisations and a group of Delhi University (DU) students carried anti-America slogans and demanded an apology from authorities at the embassy’s office in Chanakyapuri locality in central Delhi.
On Tuesday, the Indian government announced a series of measures to strip U.S. diplomats and their families of privileges, including withdrawing all airport passes and stopping import clearances including for liquor.
Police have also removed security barricades near the U.S. Embassy.
Khobragade, 39, was handcuffed and taken into custody by police over visa fraud charges last week on a street in New York while dropping off her daughter at school.
She was later released on US$250,000 bond after pleading not guilty in court.
