The department said 68 cases have been compounded while 22 cases were issued warning notices.

Those found guilty of open burning are liable to a fine of not more than RM50,000 or imprisonment not exceeding five years or both while the maximum compound is RM2,000 for each offence.

The statement also said DOE had activated Open Burning Prevention Action Plan in all states in view of the current hot and dry weather.

The implementation of standard operating procedures (SOP) of Peat Fire Prevention Program Flammable will be enhanced to prevent and control any causes or sources contributing to poor local air quality and haze.

The department advised public not to carry out open burning or allow their land or premises to be trespassed by irresponsible parties, causing open burnings, for a particular purpose or by mistake.

It reminded members of the public to immediately lodge complaints should they come across open burning with the Fire and Rescue Department by calling Toll Free: 999 and DOE: 1-800-88-2727.
