Chennai, March 1- Two days after Ram Vilas Paswan’s Lok Janshakti Party entered into a pre-poll agreement with the Bharatiya Janata Party in Bihar, Dravida Munnetra Kazhagam (DMK) leader and former Tamil Nadu chief Minister M. Karunanidhi has shown signs of cosying up to BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi.
The DMK patriarch was quoted by a Tamil newspaper Dinamalar as saying that the Gujarat Chief Minister’s continuous campaigning for upcoming General Elections shows that he is very hard working.
The newspaper also quoted Karunanidhi as saying, “Modi is my good friend too.”
In December, the DMK chief had described Modi as a “good person”, an able administrator, and also did not rule out a second honeymoon with the BJP in 2014.
Karunanidhi had said: “My personal opinion is that Modi is a good person and has taken much care about the development of his state (Gujarat).”
He had also added that Modi “has proved his capabilities as an administrator in Gujarat where the people have elected him repeatedly.”
The DMK chief’s warming up to Modi is a good sign for the BJP as Karunanidhi had recently said that his party would not align with the Congress for the parliamentary elections.
His party’s ties with the Congress Party have been at an abysmal low in the wake of the lack of support from the UPA-II government to DMK leaders at the height of the 2G scam, the Sri Lankan Tamil issue and the Indian fishermen’s plight at the hands of the Sri Lankan Navy.
