George Town, March 1 – Bumiputera entrepreneurs must play a bigger role in the business chain to ensure they benefit from economic growth, said Deputy Minister of International Trade and Industry, Datuk Hamim Samuri.
He said Bumiputera entrepreneurs had space to succeed in Malaysia’s vibrant economy and needed to play their role towards ensuring they are part of a healthy business community.
“Bumiputera’s in business have a strength, that is the largest consumer group in the country behind them. But we have a large Malay population and small number of entrepreneurs,” he added.
He told reporters this after officiating the “Penang Young Entrepreneurs Roadshow Series” here Friday night.
Also present was the Chairman of the Penang Young Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Congress Datuk Kadhar Shah Abdul Razak and President of the Pertubuhan Usahawan Generasi Muda Berjaya Malaysia (GMB), Agil Faisal Ahmad Fadzil.
Hamim said the Bumiputera entrepreneurs must play a bigger role in business and become key economic players in the future.
“If they don’t establish themselves from now, the possibility is that in 10 years time, they may not have a role,” he added.
He said the Penang Young Bumiputera Entrepreneurs Congress and the GMB can help the Bumiputera entrepreneurs by putting forth suggestions, and highlighting problems and issues to the Federal government speedily.
Hamim said the government’s policy is to always give a hearing to the appeals and needs of the people at the grassroots, including entrepreneurs and in particular Bumiputeras.
