KUALA LUMPUR, March 30 — Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has extended greetings to the Telugu community in conjunction with New Year. “I take this opportunity to wish ‘Ugadi Shubhakanshalu’ to all Malaysian Telugus in conjunction with the celebration of Telugu New Year,” he said on his Facebook account.
However, the fate of the 239 people on board the missing Malaysia Airlines plane appeared to be close to Najib’s heart.
“While welcoming the dawn of a new year, let’s also keep the passengers and the crew of Malaysia Airlines Flight MH370 and their families in our thoughts and prayers,” he said.
The Beijing-bound Boeing 777-200 aircraft vanished from the radar screens about one hour after take-off from the KL International Airport on March 8.
There are about 300,000 Telugus, who trace their origin to India’s Andhra Pradesh state, in Malaysia.
