New Delhi, May 6 – Hours after BJP’s prime ministerial candidate Narendra Modi challenged the Gandhis in their pocketborough, Priyanka Gandhi Vadra hit back at Modi for insulting her father Rajiv Gandhi. Accusing the BJP nominee of indulging in ‘low level’ politics, Priyanka said that people of Amethi will never forgive him.
In a statement, she said, “Inhone Amethi ki dharti pe mere shaheed pitaa ka apmaan kiya hai, Amethi ki janta is harkat ko kabhi maaf nahi karegi. Inki neech rajniti ka jawaab mere booth ke karyakartaa denge…Amethi ke ek ek booth se jawaab aayega…”(They have insulted my martyred father on the soil of Amethi. People of Amethi will never forgive them for this act. Workers in Amethi will reply to their low-level politics. There will be reply from each of the booths).
This is not the first time when Priyanka Gandhi has hit out at BJP’s PM nominee Narendra Modi, “I am Rajiv Gandhi’s daughter,” was Priyanka Gandhi terse reply to purported comments by Modi that he considers her as his daughter.
Earlier during an election rally in support of BJP candidate Smriti Irani, Modi accused Congress of practicing politics of ‘arrogance’ and said Rajiv Gandhi, when he was Congress General Secretary, had once publicly ‘abused’ and ‘humiliated’ the then Andhra Pradesh Chief Minister T Anjaiah at airport.
Earlier in the day, Modi took a swipe at Priyanka Gandhi for her Smriti Irani “who” comment, saying this was a reflection of “arrogance” and asserted that she was his “younger sister” and “representative” who knows much more about Amethi than the entire Gandhi family.
Apparently agitated at Priyanka’s remark, the BJP’s prime ministerial candidate said he had chosen Smriti for Amethi to tend this constituency which is the “most backward” despite being represented by the Gandhi family for 40 years.
Addressing a rally in the Gandhi family bastion, Modi said, “One of their (Congress) leaders even asked who is Smriti Irani? In democracy the royals do not have the right to ask such questions. This is nothing, but arrogance.
When arrogance grows, people tend to lose their sense and they ask such questions.”
He went on to add, “I want to tell who is Smriti Irani. She is my younger sister and she will take care of your welfare and development.”
On Sunday when Priyanka was asked about the attacks against Congress by BJP candidate Smriti Irani, she asked, “Who”? When the reporter repeated, “Smriti Irani,” she said grinning,”Oh”.
Hitting back at Priyanka, Modi said Smriti knows much more about Amethi than the Gandhi family. “Ask about names of villages of Amethi. Smriti will know names of 100 villages while the entire Gandhi family will not be able to name even 10 villages.”
