KUALA LUMPUR, May 25 — Police have arrested three men suspected to be members of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) terrorist group in separate raids in Petaling Jaya and Klang, Selangor.
Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Khalid Abu Bakar said they were picked up by the Counter Terrorism Division of the police’s Special Branch on May 15.
He said initial investigation found that the suspects had entered Malaysia illegally in 2004 and made the country as their base to collect data and disseminating propaganda, while trying to revive LTTE activities in the international arena.
“During the raids, police also seized propaganda materials, media equipment and currencies from 24 countries worth RM20,176.53,” he said in a statement here.
Khalid said all suspects were found to have used the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugee’s (UNHCR) cards to stay in the country and to avoid legal action by the local authorities.
Khalid said one of the suspects even possessed a working permit at a non-exist company.
All of them were now detained under the Immigration Department for further action.
Khalid said the police would work closely with the UNHCR Office to ensure that terrorists would not exploit and abuse the UNHCR cards to turn Malaysia as their operation base or to carry out terrorism activities, which could pose threats to Malaysia or other countries.
