KUALA LUMPUR, July 19 – Md Ali Md Salim, a Malaysian passenger onboard Malaysia Airlines (MAS) Flight MH17 which crashed in Ukraine near the Russian border, had uploaded a video on his Instagram account while seated in the plane before take-off.
The 15-second video was uploaded under the 30-year-old’s account name “@masa1777” at noon (Amsterdam time), with the caption:
“Bismillah…#hatiadasikitgentar” (In the name of Allah…feeling slightly nervous). The video also showed several passengers and a MAS stewardess placing their personal items into the overhead baggage compartment and getting ready for take-off.
His friend, Mohd Zaem Nordin, 24, who shared the video on his Instagram said he did not expect Md Ali to be in the ill-fated plane. “When I saw the video which had been uploaded about 15 hours earlier, I was shocked and did not think he would be on the plane,” he said when contacted by Bernama today.
According to Mohd Zaem, Md Ali was pursuing his doctorate degree in psychology at a university in Armsterdam, and was expected to complete his studies next year. Mohd Zaem, who also shared the video on Instagram, said the last time he was in contact with Md Ali was on June 25 on Facebook.
“We always kept in touch on Facebook and the last time, he said he wanted to come home this year to spend Raya with his family. “I did not think he would not get his wish, and this video seems to be the last one,” he said. Mohd Zaem, who had known Md Ali since 2010, described him as cheerful and always concerned about his friends.
“We first met when he was working as a fellow in UKM (Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia), Kuala Lumpur branch and he was friendly and easy to get along with,” he said. Flight MH17 left Amsterdam at 12.15pm (Amsterdam time) and was scheduled to arrive in KLIA, Sepang at 6.10am (Malaysia time) today.
