kayveas-300x225MELAKA, Sept 29 – People’s Progressive Party (PPP) president, Tan Sri M.  said only members capable of performing their duties and promoting the party and Barisan Nasional (BN) should offer to contest in the party polls at PPP’s 61st general assembly on Nov 30.

He said those wishing to contest must be willing to sacrifice their time to develop the party right down to the grassroots level.

“They cannot run for president, vice-president or members of the executive committee simply because they want the position. If they want the position, they must be able to perform their duties,” he told reporters after opening Melaka PPP’s Annual Convention here, Sunday.

Also present was Melaka PPP chairman Datuk Chiw Tiang Chai.

Asked whether he expected competition for the presidency, Kayveas said the party does not stop any individual from contesting in the election.

In fact, he said he had served as president for 21 years, and was willing to step down if there was a candidate who meets the criteria.

“If there is no one, I am willing to continue because there is nothing in the post except hard work,” he said.

In the meantime, Kayveas said PPP emphasised on the development of the youth in the party, involving three main aspects namely career, health and finance to improve their living standards.

He said 70 per cent of the 600,000 PPP members was from the younger generation.
