US to help India develop smart cities

WASHINGTON, October 2- The US will help India develop three smart cities as part of the Indian government’s plans to establish 100 smart cities,Press Trust of India (PTI) reported.

This was announced following talks between Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi and US President Barack Obama here Tuesday.The three smart cities are Allahabad, Ajmer and Visakhapatnam.

Indian Finance Minister Arun Jaitley said while presenting the union budget for 2014-2015 recently that the new government has a goal of developing 100 smart cities as satellite towns of larger cities.

“With development reaching an increasingly large number of people, the pace of migration from rural areas to cities is rising,” Jaitley said.The US will also join hands with civil society and authorities to provide clean water and sewage facilities in 500 cities in India.

Modi wrapped up his five-day visit to the US on Tuesday.
