PETALING JAYA: Padang Serai MP N Gobalakrishnan will defend his seat as an independent candidate, hoping that Barisan Nasional will back him.
“I’ve asked BN to show me support by not contesting against me,” he said in an interview on the weekend.
He said he had heard that MCA was interested in the seat but added that a BN candidate was not likely to defeat him.
“I definitely stand a better chance than an MCA candidate,” he told FMT. “Nobody has shown more interest in the wellbeing of the people there than I have.”
Gobalakrishnan quit PKR in early 2011 after receiving a show-cause letter over his attacks against the party leadership.
He claimed that his status as an independent MP had not affected the quality of his service to his constituents.
“I left PKR because they never had a clean and open election within the party,” he said. “But now they are fighting for clean elections in the upcoming GE13.
He accused Pakatan Rakyat of having ignored the people of Padang Serai in the last five years.
“They are always trying to find fault with the government when they themselves are not any better.”
Referring to recent campaign functions that Pakatan has been organising in Padang Serai, he said he would advise voters to be sceptical of the promises made by the opposition bloc.
“Don’t trust and believe them blindly,” he said.
He claimed that he had been raising his constituents’ problems directly with the relevant ministers to get them resolved.
He heaped praise on Prime Minister Najib Tun Razak, saying he was willing to listen to the people and help them.
“Take your problems to Najib,” he said. “He will get things done for you. He is more than willing to help and make changes.
“Barisan is doing very well. I don’t want Pakatan Rakyat to spoil it when we have something good going on.”
