peshawar3_2246187gNEW DELHI, December 17 – India joined the rest of the world in condemning Tuesday’s terrorist attack on an army-run school in Pakistan which killed about 140 people and injured 245 others.

The majority of those killed in the school in Peshawar were children. Prime Minister Narendra Modi condemned the attack in the strongest terms during a telephone conversation with Pakistani counterpart Nawaz Sharif.

A statement from the Ministry of External Affairs quoted Modi as saying that the killing of innocent children in a temple of learning was not only an attack against Pakistan, but an assault against the entire humanity.

“At a time when the world is getting disturbingly accustomed to acts of terror, this terrible tragedy has shaken the conscience of the world,” he said. Modi said he hoped the children who had witnessed the horrific attack and loss of their friends would come through this trauma through counselling. He told Sharif the incident is a call for India and Pakistan and other countries to join hands to defeat terrorism.
