New Delhi, January 13 – After he gave the biggest flop of his career with Kochadaiiyaan, we thought superstar Rajinikanth will make a remarkable comeback with Lingaa. It is almost indigestible but Rajini-Sonakshi Sinha starrer fell flat again on the first week of it’s release.
Directed by K.S. Ravikumar, Lingaa released on Rajinikanth’s birthday on December 12, 2014 hoping to make a difference at the box office. But touted as one of the biggest release of 2014, Lingaa disappointed. The five possible reasons why Lingaa received a big blow at the box office.
Rajini fever is over:
There will always be people who will queue up for his films at 4am outside cinema halls but not everyone is a Rajini fan. Yes, not anymore. Rajini Saar, we are tired of seeing you walk in slow-motion across the screen. It does not make us go into paraoxyms, especially younger generations.
That’s not all, if one Rajinikanth on the screen wasn’t enough, that Lingaa has a double role of him in the film. A little too much to handle. Technology can make you look younger but we do know Rajinikanth is a 65-year-old romancing his heroine who is half his age. The number game is showing now, not making him a hero material, no more. The superstar Lingaa is meant for his superfans only.
The phenomenon called Rajinikanth stumbled due to weak storyline. Lingaa is long with a weak storyline that flounders with a long drawn out climax. His films have a pattern which is no longer entertaining to the masses. He fights, he romances, he can never go wrong because he is Thalaivar.
While movie goers are opting for realistic kind of a cinema, did we mention PK has garnered Rs.368 crore, Lingaa and his other films in the past like Kochadaiyaan and Robot are too unreal and over the top. Does Lingaa have something incredibly new to offer? Sadly the answer to that is a No.
From Sivaji to Lingaa, it’s the same kind of cinema but now people want the change, the difference, the reality. Time to see something beyond Rajini in his films, asking for too much, eh?
Duration of the film:
And if this wasn’t enough, then the duration of Lingaa is 2 hours, 55 minutes. A major drawback in the film, Lingaa is quite lengthy compared to current duration of the films. Post interval, the film loses pace and gets a tad bit long, making the viewers look bored and distracted.
The music by AR Rahman isn’t magic either. Average music disappoints the fans who had too much expectations from the maestro. The presence of Sonakshi Sinha and Anushka Shetty is as good as guest appearances making Lingaa almost Rajinikanth’s solo starrer film. We did mention we are tired of that, we did, right
Lingaa is a film for die hard Rajini fans but the film has a very predictable story. The sets are stunning, the technology is amazing and the graphics used are as good as Hollywood standards but the film lacks content and freshness.
Rajinikanth’s larger than life performance and youthful looks in every film may get you excited but it is visibly clear the movie has been rushed through for a quick release.
We miss the powerful dialogues, solid script and inspiring music because it does break our hearts to see AR Rahman, Sonakshi Sinha, accomplished director K S Ravikumar and Rajinikanth all rolled into one and still coming out with Lingaa.
Move over Rajinikanth, Vikram and his I is here. With other actors like Vikram, Vijay and Dhanush coming out and strong, Rajinikanth has to pull up his socks and seriously think about either taking his scripts seriously or act his age.
Advance bookings have already started for Vikram-Shankar’s upcoming film I and Vijay’s Kaththi is doing well in Tamil Nadu, we have to admit Rajinikanth is no longer the best thing happened to Tamil cinema.
Although Lingaa gained enough controversies with one aspiring filmmaker alleging plagiarized script used in the film to now distributors of the film in Tamil Nadu seeking compensation from Rajinikanth, but nothing seems to have helped the box office collection. The overall collections of Lingaa is estimated to be Rs.149 crore (worldwide).
