egypt_650_020915091110New Delhi, February 9 – At least 22 people were killed and more than 35 injured in clashes between security forces and football fans in Cairo. The clashes started when he fans forced their way into the stadium without buying tickets.

“The incident took place outside the Air Defense Stadium ahead of a match between Egyptian Premier League clubs Zamalek and ENPPI,” the Ministry of Interior said

It said the supporters of Zamalek, known as Ultras White Knights, tried to storm into the match without tickets. The security forces tried to disperse the fans after they torched a police vehicle and blocked the road.

“More than ten thousand people, who did not have tickets for the match, tried to break into the stadium. A number of them were killed and dozens injured due to stampede,” the Egyptian Interior Ministry said in a statement.

17 Zamalek fans were reported to be arrested for inciting violence. 70 people were killed in a similar incident three years ago after a riot broke out at a stadium in Port Said, following which Egypt had curbed the number of people allowed inside a stadium during football matches.
