KUALA LUMPUR, February 26 – It has been one week after MIC president Datuk Seri G. Palanivel agreed to call for a 2009 Central Working Committee (CWC) meeting to set up an Independent Election Committee in the party and there are no signs or indications when it will take place.
MIC secretary-general Datuk S. Sothinathan when contacted by Bernama today said he was still waiting for Palanivel’s order to hold the meeting.
“No directive from the president, we are still waiting. When we get the new order, we will announce accordingly,” he said when asked on the meeting development.
On Feb 18, BN secretary-general Datuk Seri Tengku Adnan Tengku Mansor in a statement said Palanivel would be calling for an emergency 2009 CWC meeting to establish an Independent Election Committee in the party.
Tengku Adnan said the matter was agreed upon at a top BN meeting which was attended by BN chairman Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, BN deputy chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin, Palanivel and Subramaniam as well as himself.
Tengku Adnan also said the meeting reached an agreement on holding re-election for MIC and among other decisions made was to use the 2009 MIC CWC list as decided by RoS.
On the same day, Palanivel said he had directed Sothinathan to hold an emergency 2009 CWC meeting, after the Chinese New Year.
Without revealing the actual date, Palanivel said he would be sending a letter to Tengku Adnan to keep him informed on the matter.
On Feb 9, Home Minister Datuk Seri Dr Ahmad Zahid Hamidi said MIC needed to hold re-election for all posts between April and July this year to avoid getting the party deregistered.
The crisis erupted after RoS cancelled the elections of three vice-presidents and 23 CWC posts held in Melaka in November 2013 following a complaint of irregularities and in a letter dated Dec 5, 2014, RoS ordered MIC to hold re-election for the affected posts within 90 days.
