PUTRAJAYA — The Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) is very surprised at the decision of the Penang High Court today which acquitted former Penang Chief Minister Lim Guan Eng and businesswoman Phang Li Koon on a corruption charge concerning the purchase of a bungalow which was below market value.

“The MACC wishes to point out that the withdrawal of the case was decided by the office of the Attorney-General and not from the MACC,”the Commission said in a brief statement, here today.

Justice Datuk Hadhariah Syed Ismail acquitted and released Lim, 58, and Phang, 46, following the application of counsel Ramkarpal Singh who represented Lim, and Datuk V.Sithambaram and Hisyam Teh Poh Teik, who represented Phang, for their clients to be fully acquitted from the charge.

Hadhariah said she did not agree with the application by the prosecution that the charge be withdrawn and both the accused be discharged without acquittal (DNAA).

DNAA means that the prosecution could continue with the charge against the accused.
