Kuala Lumpur, July 6 – Malaysia Prime Minister Najib Razak speaks during a break the fast event in Semenyih, Malaysia yesterday.
Najib Razak is battling accusations that he received millions of dollars in his personal accounts from a state fund, in what is turning out to be the worst crisis he has faced since becoming Malaysia’s leader in 2009.
The case stems from a report 03 July by The Wall Street Journal that 700 million US dollars was moved among government agencies, banks and entities linked to the beleaguered state fund, 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB), and ended up in Najib’s personal accounts in five separate deposits.
The report said that the largest transactions were deposits of 620 million dollars and another 61 million dollars in March 2013, two months before the general elections. Najib was expected to file a lawsuit against the newspaper later in the week.
