Ipoh – Outgoing Speaker of Perak State Assembly, Datuk Seri S.K.Devamany congratulated newly minted Speaker S.Thangesvari who was sworn in today and pledged to support her.
“Having held the post the last three years myself, I am so proud to pass the baton on to such a worthy and respected leader, one, full of caliber to fulfill the responsibilities and duties of a Speaker. Madam Thangesvari is a highly revered lawyer from the Indian community, who was also the former Chief of MIC State Women section. Having amassed experience on state and national political platforms, Madam Thangesvari has created history now. She has just become the state’s first Indian woman Speaker since Independence and since Perak DUN started in 1959” Devamany said in a press statement.
Devamany, who is also the Deputy President of MIC, also pointed out that Madam Thangesvari’s appointment is a great display of women empowerment to the state, nation and also to MIC. “Women are steadfastly becoming the forefront of progressive movements, resourceful leaders and are therefore very crucial in nation-building. Eleanor Roosevelt summed up, rather eloquently, the resilience of a woman – “Women are like tea bags. You never know how strong they are until they’re in hot water”. I am therefore so proud to witness this memorable appointment of Madam Thangesvari as the new Perak Speaker” Devamany further said.
“I would also like to use this opportunity to thank Sultan of Perak DYMM Paduka Seri Tuanku Sultan Dr Nazrin Shah, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak, Menteri Besar of Perak YAB Dato’ Seri DiRaja Dr Zambry bin Abdul Kadir and MIC President YAB Datuk Seri Dr S.Subramaniam, for their support and confidence shown to me during my tenure as Perak Speaker. On the same note, I wish my successor all the very best in executing her role as the new Perak Speaker” Devamany said in his statement.
The post of Perak State Assembly Speaker became vacant upon the appointment of Devamany as a Senator and Deputy Minister in Prime Minister’s department.
