Facebook users will soon be able to stream audio content live, the company recently announced in its blog.

Much like LiveVideo, users should then be able to use the Facebook app and microphone to record from the environment or their voice, and broadcast everything live on the social network.

Other users can use emojis to respond, comment, or ask questions.

The idea is intended to help audio producers such as radio stations or podcasters to spread their content. But Facebook is also envisioning streams of readings and interviews, for instance. The new feature is supposed to eat up significantly less bandwidth than video, so it can also be used in areas with poor reception. In addition, audio requires lower volume of data than video.

Providers such as the BBC World Service and the US book publishing company Harper Collins will be among the first to roll out the new feature, with plans to make it available to all users in early 2017.
