Douglas Uggah EmbasKUCHING, April 8 – The Barisan Nasional (BN) in Sarawak is up to the challenge posed by the opposition who are expected to capitalise on the electronic and social media in running their 13th General Election (13GE) campaign.  Betong Parliamentary incumbent, Datuk Seri Douglas Uggah Embas, today said the State BN was well aware of the opposition’s plan of using such media and was all ready with its arsenal to counter them.

“We are aware that we are in the 21st century and the campaigning style is different with new technology being used. We are all set to face any form of approach taken by the opposition.

“We are also ready to go into war in the social media in our own way to convince the people that we should be elected to run this country in the next five years,” he told reporters after handing over Federal government aid to Tabuan Dayak All Saints’ Church here.

In spite of having such facilities, Uggah, who is also the Parti Pesaka Bumiputera Bersatu Sarawak (PBB) senior vice-president, said the opposition actually had no proper issues that they could bank on, as far as the Betong constituency is concerned. He believed that the opposition would continue to play up native land issues, apart from racial and religious issues, in their attempts to lure votes in this coming general election.

“Even their manifesto doesn’t show anything new. Not much can be expected from them,” he said.

On the assistance given to churches in Sarawak, he said a total of RM5 million had been handed out to 12 churches throughout the state in the last three years.  He said the aid was a reflection of the inclusiveness policy of the Barisan Nasional to make sure that all groups in the country who required assistance would get it from the government.
