PETALING JAYA: The wait is finally over for fans of South Korean rapper Psy as he released the follow-up to his megahit (Oppa) Gangnam Style.
Titled Gentleman, the song which was released on iTunes, immediately rose to the top of the South Korean music charts.
The single, however, received mixed reviews from Malaysian fans who had the chance to listen to the single.
“I heard it but didn’t like it. I think it doesn’t sound like a Korean pop song,” said Miho Ho, 22, a fresh graduate and former president of Taylor’s University K-Generation Club, which is dedicated to all things K-pop.
The highly-anticipated single features Psy’s signature catchy hook with a bit more electro feel to it and has the line “I’m a mother father gentleman” on repeat.
Psy will follow the release of the single with a “live” performance which will be broadcast from Psy’s sold-out Happening concert in Seoul, South Korea.
Malaysian fans can watch this on YouTube at 5.30pm (local time) Saturday.
Eric Wong, 23, who heard Gentleman on a local radio station said he didn’t like the song’s mind-numbing beats.
“It sounds like he’s trying too hard to make another viral sensation like Gangnam Style,” Wong added.
For event manager K’ng Yee Pei, 29, she thought the new single’s lyrics could raise a few eyebrows and did not sound any different to Gangnam Style.
“It sounds quite naughty. Hopefully, it will be able to divert attention away from a possible North Korean nuke threat,” she joked.
Student Phyllis Ho, 20, however, found the song catchy.
“I think the tune has a more refreshing sound than Gangnam Style. Honestly, Gangnam Style is overrated.”
Loan Cheong, Universal Music Malaysia managing director, is confident that the new Psy single would be as popular as Gangnam Style.
The accompanying video for Gentleman won’t be out so fast though as the singer just finished shooting it on Tuesday and it is being edited.
