COMMENT BY YB PROF DR P.RAMASAMY, DEPUTY CHIEF MINISTER II, PENANG
Give Anwar a chance
It doesn’t matter anymore whether the former twice prime minister Mahathir Mohammed has confidence in the leadership of the current Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim.
Whether Mahathir lacks confidence in Anwar or he simply thinks that the latter should not be the prime minister is unclear.
For Mahathir having deliberately spoiled the chances of Anwar becoming the prime minister twice in the political history of the country lacks the legitimacy or credibility in commenting on Anwar.
The question is: whether Anwar was unfit as the finance minister under the leadership of Mahathir is questionable.
How can Anwar be termed as one of best finance ministers of the country and yet Mahathir terms him as minister who blindly followed the dictates of the IMF in managing the economy.
The entire world knows that Anwar was removed as Mahathir’s deputy on trumped up charges due to the former’s popularity amongst the Malays in Umno.
Mahathir is essentially a person who is vindictive and wicked.
Having lost his deposit in the parliamentary seat of Langkawi, he cannot digest the fact that his one time nemesis has become the prime minister of the country.
After PH won the GE14, Mahathir was supposed to hand over the prime minister’s post to Anwar after two years.
Mahathir refused to hand over the post to Anwar giving all kinds of lame excuses.
In the end, the Sheraton Move with the initial support of Mahathir was not just to thwart the chances of Anwar becoming the prime minister but to ensure the political collapse of PH.
Having been the prime mover behind the moves to thwart Anwar chances, he has the temerity to say that Anwar might not be suitable prime minister.
Mahathir is essence is sour grapes; a kind of dog in the manger story, that only he deserves to become the prime minister and not others especially Anwar.
Mahathir is a bitter old man, I think he should not be taken seriously anymore. He has nothing but bitterness towards Anwar.
Anwar just took office a few weeks ago.
He is not boasting that he will be a great prime minister.
But right now having proved his parliamentary majority, he is doing the right thing to politically and economically stabilise the country.
Let us give Anwar a chance to steer the country through the rough waters.
Mahathir should just step aside to enjoy his retirement.
