ANWARKUALA LUMPUR, May 4- Towards the last moments before polling begins on Sunday, Barisan Nasional is more confident that it will be given a two-thirds mandate to carry out its transformation agenda for the people.

This confidence was stated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak today during a meeting with several media editors, but added that he wanted the BN machinery to keep working hard although they received good response during his walkabouts.

On the other hand, opposition leader Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has begun making confusing statements on the implementation of hudud, by stating that PAS had agreed that hudud was not the opposition coalition’s goal and could not be implemented in the country.

Implementation of hudud requires two-thirds majority in Parliament to amend the Federal Constitution and PAS realised it could not be achieved alone, said Anwar in a statement published on his blog today.

When asked about Anwar’s statement, PAS leaders tried to avoid commenting on it. PAS vice-president Datuk Mahfuz Omar, when asked to comment on Anwar’s statement, refused to comment saying he had not read the statement.

PAS information chief Datuk Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said there was no issue on hudud as agreed upon in the opposition coalition’s manifesto which did not mention hudud.

“I don’t want to comment on Anwar’s statement,” he said when told that the Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) de facto leader had said that hudud might not be able to be implemented in the country.

PAS leaders such as its spiritual leader Datuk Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat and his deputy, Datuk Dr Haron Din, had previously said that hudud was the foundation of PAS’ struggles and the party would implement it if Pakatan Rakyat captures Putrajaya.

Their statements were refuted several times by DAP chairman Karpal Singh, who said that DAP strongly opposed the formation of an Islamic state that practices the hudud law.
