fadilah-yusofKUALA TERENGGANU, May 28 – The Works Ministry is to reward performing contractors with more contracts, said Minister Datuk Fadillah Yusof ((photo).

He said contractors who completed projects according to specifications and standards and on time should be rewarded.

“In the present situation, the focus is on projects which adhere to the stipulated standards and specifications. If the contractors perform well, they deserve to be rewarded with new projects,” he said after opening a 2013 Malaysian Public Works Department (JKR) senior officers meeting, here, today.

Fadillah said that in ensuring the government transformation programme proceeded well, the ministry would stress on the implementation of all government projects.

Contractors who failed to carry out their responsibilities stood to face stringent action, such as having their licences revoked or being denied new projects, he said.

“Some contractors must be guided. If they still fail, action will be taken under the system of penalties. If they have been given a chance but still fail, the contractors will be blacklisted or their licences revoked,” he said.

In the meantime, he said, different approaches would be adopted in the implementation of infrastructure development projects in the peninsula, Sabah and Sarawak.

Fadillah today had a look at the 184-km stretch of the East Coast Highway from Jabor, Kemaman, to Kampung Gemuruh in northern Terengganu under construction and which was expected to be completed at the end of next year.

He said the project, in 12 phases, started in March 2006 and was initially estimated to cost RM3.7 billion.
