Petitions filed to quash GE13 results for Batu and Lembah Pantai seats

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12- A Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate for the Batu parliamentary seat and a voter in the Lembah Pantai yesterday  filed petitions to nullify the 13th general election results of their respective constituency.

BNThe BN candidate, Dr Dominic Lau Hoe Chai, 46, and Lembah Pantai voter Mohamad Sazali Kamilan, 40, filed the petitions through a legal firm, Messrs.  Raja Riza & Associates, at the High Court here today.

Lau named Pakatan Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) candidate Chua Tian Chang (Tian Chua), returning officer for Batu, Mustafa Mohd Nor and Election Commission (EC) as respondents.

In the petition, Lau claimed that Tian Chua was not eligible to contest as the High Court had fined him RM2,000, in default two months jail, for causing injury on a policeman in 2007.

In failing to reject Tian Chua’s nomination papers, Lua said, Mustafa, as the returning officer, had breached Regulation 7(1)(c) of the Elections (Conduct of Elections) Regulations 1981.

He also claimed that Tian Chua had displayed campaign materials before the election campaign began.

Meanwhile, Mohamad Sazali named PKR candidate for the Lembah Pantai seat, Nurul Izzah Anwar, the Lembah Pantai returning officer Rolan Abd Rahman and theEC as respondents.

nurul-izzahMohamad Sazali claimed that last May 4, Nurul Izzah had disturbed voters in the area by telling them not to vote for the BN candidate, Datuk Raja Nong Chik Raja Zainal Abidin, by giving false statements on the Malaysiakini website.

He also claimed that Rolan failed to report to the EC that two ballot boxes for Lembah Pantai were damaged, purportedly by a group of PKR supporters who obstructed the vehicle carrying the boxes to to the vote tally centre.

Tian ChuaTian Chua defeated Lau with a majority of 13,284 votes, while Nurul Izzah won the Lembah Pantai parliamentary seat with a 1,847-vote majority.

Meanwhile in    MELAKA, the state BN filed petitions to quash the GE13 results for the Bukit Katil parliamentary seat and the Bukit Baru state seat.

State BN chairman Datuk Seri Mohd. Ali Rustam said the petitions were filedthrough the legal firm of Rosfinah & Co, assisted by the firm, Messrs. Adli & Co.

Mohd Ali, who contested as BN candidate for the Bukit Katil seat, lost to PKR’s  Shamsul Iskandar Mohd. Akin with a 5,447-vote majority.

The BN candidate for Bukit Baru, Karim Yaacob, who is the state BN Youth  chief, lost to  PAS candidate, Dr Khalid Kassim with a majority of 48 votes.
